The old Lock Screen photo

Today I wanted to change my phone background.  It is currently my old lock screen pic.  I like Supergirl, especially her pre-DcNu version, and I enjoy reading her comics.  So I wanted her.  I have her flying on clouds because I think the clouds add something nice to the phone, like wonder or possibility.  But’s it been that photo for far too long.  Time to change.

Now I have requirements for my photo cover.  Their simple but make my life hell when choosing.

• Cannot be a sexualized pose
• Has to have a rich background
• Has to be in the air or flying

Choice #1

Super-girl is cute and/or hot, I believe Kryptonians get DAMN GOOD LOOKS from our sun as well, but when I look at my phone every time I don’t want to become the man of steel myself.  How awkward is that in a meeting?  Need those numbers bill?  Sure let me check my phone.  Whoops – up, up and away!

Also I look at Supergirl and see strength and power – not slutty and Oh! Where did my panties go?  So the sexualized pose is out.  Also my phone is used in public – a lot – so I don’t want to be THAT GUY.  You know the one.  The guy who has hentai on his phone, watches porn on the bus, or shows those super sexy pic to EVERYONE!!!  The because I have internet on the bus means I have do on the bus what I would do at home guy.

Home + Internet = Pron

Internet + Phone = mobile home

Mobile home = smartphone

Smartphone + bus DOES NOT = Pron!! Seriously

Choice # 2

So I came across Choice #1 (see above) and I loved it.  Nice sky background, Not a sexualized pose and I even think it’s Michael Turner to boot.  So I load it on my iphone.  Wow – got it in one try and —- and —- DAMN!!  Her head’s to close to the top.  Her face is cut off by the time.  It’s a wasted picture.  So I go hunting again. I found this one, perfect alignment, perfect background but Superman in the background.  I don’t care who you are….you show up in a panel with Supes and you fall into the background.  It’s like gravity or the comedy rule of three – it’s a law!!

Choice # 3

I kept looking.  Eventually I found one that fit, Choice # 3, met all my crazy criteria, but I dunno – I just didn’t — feel it.  What?  My crazy has emotions too.  I’m not a freaking Vulcan.

Then I found it.

My new photo.

It had sky, It had strong Lady Supes, and it even had the moon.  It was perfect.  So here I am with my new lock-screen photo and all I can think is — GOD HELP ME WHEN  I HAVE TO PICK OUT DRAPES!!

So how does a geek chose a new photo? A new profile pic? A new wallpaper for their PC?  They do it with care, and precision, they think about everything and every aspect, and they do it knowing that in most cases – nobody but them will every see it.

Because to a Geek a photo is more then just a photo.  It is a symbol of our individuality, even if 90 other people at the con have the same Deadpool symbol, it shows us what we are, what we strive to be and deep down what we wish we were.

A picture is a thousand words, and I had to go through 3 thousand of those words till I found the right one!

Oh, Steven Moffat, why do you so often introduce ladies that you claim are bisexual only to never give any hint or evidence in the actual show that they are? River Song is not the first character to be outed outside of her TV show, but is there any evidence in the actual show that River Song is bisexual? And does it matter if there isn't?

A dead samurai who crosses worlds to help kill Sin.  I mean aside from the fact he can’t wear clothes properly he still is worthy of the list.  I mean look at this guy.  He’s big, he’s scary, and you get enough level up orbs and BAMMO!!!! He unstoppable – except for a phoenix down…..but that brings him back from undead-dead-living-dreamness…….ok I’m confused again.

9  Afro

Take Phil Lamar (see below) add in a pinch of Sam Jackson and RZA rap and you get a sword wielding Nick Fury that flips right the hell out when you reply to his ‘Join the Avengers?’ question with a confused ‘What?’

But seriously he is the Eternal Number 2.  He holds the headband needed to challenge the god-like Number 1.  So he spends his life protecting the headband so one day he can face Number One and run his blade through him.

Imagine being blind.  Now imagine being blind in a series outside of anything Robert J Sawyer rights (so perma blindness).  Now imagine you are the best samurai in the world!!!  Now imagine you’re not really blind.  Now imagine dance numbers!!!

5  Silver Samurai

It’s rare to fight Wolverine and survive.  It even rarer to do it and NOT be Sabertooth.  Now picture the ability to survive a Wolverine fight and do so in a silver suit and have enough clout to do so on screen!  Yeah!!

4  Cyan

This man abilities are so great that he rivals Sabin for deadliest PC in Final Fantasy 6.  Seriously, picture everything Cloud is, everything Squall is, everything Sephiroth and Auron and Tidus is just better!!  Better back story, better progression, better character development and with more honour and skill.  He. Is. Better.

3  Samurai Jack

This is Phil LaMarr at his best!  Picture Hermes from Futurama: Now take away the stamp, add in a sword, remove him from his parents, send him on the Batman-childhood-trainning-montage in which he learns from Robin Hood, Shaolin Monks and warriors from all across the world and you get the greatest warrior ever assembled to fight a great evil.  Ok….now that I think of it.  Hermes might have been a bad starting point.

Intermission

So this is where my wife and I differed.  We argued who would be number one and who would be number 2 (childish giggle).  What you see below is MY choice, hers would be flipped.  So in short I WON!!!! And I had to sleep on the couch for like two months.   HARSH!!!

2  Himura Kenshin

This samurai was the greatest that ever lived.  He was Battousai the Manslayer a samurai trained from a young age to kill.  His style is so fast that most can’t even see the blade.  But as the war ended he gave up killing.  The only way to give up killing with his style was to get a special blade made: the sakabatō.  This is a katana with the blade on the inside.  So all of his killing stroke no longer killed….they just hurt like a bitch!!  He is a wanderer who has a good heart and a troubled past.  Now he’s trying to save lives instead of taking them.  My wife says he is also super cute!!  That counts for something right?

1  Miyamoto Usagi

I have watched and read loads of bunny based fiction.  This marks the first time the rabbit is male.  Weird.

I first met Usagi in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 80’s cartoon.  He was a badass samurai with bunny ears!!  Then I went and researched who this character was.  That’s how I came across the Usagi Yojimbo comic.  I hunted my library for these books and read each one carefully.  Usagi is a samurai who was trained by a hermit master (I swear every hermit is a master) and then became a samurai to a lord.  Sadly his lord was lost in battle and Usagi was forever doomed to be the ronin.  Now he wanders the world doing good, fighting evil, and protecting the innocent!  Long live the bunny ears!!

So this is it, this is the moment where you stop loving Geeks Versus Nerds.  You’ve been to the show, you religiously download the podcasts, and you even pointed at me when you suddenly see me and say something like “Hey you’re the man in the hat!  Get out of my bedroom!”

But all that is meaningless after you read my next words.  They are words so horrifying to most, so terrifying, and so vile that most get sick just by hearing them.  They are also words that I try to live by.

So this week we’ve been gifted with the trailer for the next chapter in the Hunger Games Films: Catching Fire.  We see Jennifer Lawrence returning as Katniss Everdeen and Woody Harrelson staring in the first sequel he’s ever done.

So what we have today is a word-search.  Below is a list of names from all three books in the series and their two cinematic counterparts.  See if you can find them all.

The lives of Tao by Wesley Chu is one of the few genre mash-up I truly like.  The book is about Roen Tan, a out-of-shape IT technician stuck in a dead-end job in a rut of a life he hates, who gets possessed by a symbiotic based-alien named Tao.  Tao is an anient alien life-form that crashed landed on Earth in the time of dinosaurs.  They have existed that entire time by possessing one life-form to another, shaping humanity in a bid to get home.  But as Roen finds out things are never that simple.  The aliens have split into two factions who are at war and Roen’s just been drafted.

Roen becomes the mix between James Bond and Ezio Auditore da Firenze 

The book is a mash-up of the spy and science fiction genres.  On one hand we have aliens and war but on the other we have dead-drops, safe houses, passwords, and spy training.  The sci-fi aspect reminds me of Doctor Who or Highlander: The Series. Both series go back to the past, one physically the other in flashback, and we witness major events with a sci-fi twist.  Either the Doctor, or an alien, was involved in the Magna Carte or Duncan MacCleod good friend was actually Jackie Robinson.  In The Lives of Tao we learn that Tao, and others of his kind, have shared bodies and influenced major political and historical figures like Gengis Khan, Voltaire, Churchhill, and even Shakespeare.  The Lives of Tao takes a look at history in much of the same vain as Assassin’s Creed does: history with a creative twist.  In short Roen Tam’s been drafted into the eternally-good-but-eternally-stuck-as-the-underdogs Assassins and the Templars are getting stronger by the minute.

The spy genre side of the book starts at basic training, putting our unlikely hero through the ringer and teaching him the ropes much like Collin Farrell in The Recruit.   We seem him go from out of shape into a lean-mean fighting machine.  We seem him progress through the unflattering world of boring mission to high security shoot out much like Piper Perabo in Covert Affairs.  It ends up in an island shoot-out much like the Connery days of James Bond.

The Lives of Tao is one of those good books that pulls off the mash-up perfectly.  We get the full sci-fi feeling combined with the spy genre without either side getting diluted or ignored.  We get the full effect and in turn get a character we care about.  Roen becomes the mix between James Bond and Ezio Auditore da Firenze (Assassin Creed 2, Brotherhood, Revelations).

The book isn’t perfect but the downfalls are minor at best.  The first chapter throws in the final days of Tao’s previous host.  This means, much like the opening scene of a bond film, you get thrown in the deep end.  Sadly unlike a Bond film you don’t have the natural progression inwards.  The first chapter is like been beaten with a sci-fi film when you missed that couple minutes of voice-over that explains everything.  The first chapter is heavy with weird names like Prophus and Genjix and tossed before characters like Tao and Jeo without as little of an explanation.  It makes the first chapter really hard to get through but after that its gravy and everything makes sense.  While I fear that there are a great number of people who won’t make it past the first chapter those who do will be treated for a nice surprise.

Anywho today I wrote an article that examines why books make us crazy?  Why we become so fanatical over them?

What is it about a good book that makes people crazy?

During the part of my life I like to call Growing up Redneck I did a lot of an activity that was very unpopular in my area called READING! I’m a big fan of reading, always have been, but it never fails to impress me how passionate people can get over a book.

I’ve seen people go nuts over a movie, I’ve done it myself, but even that level of nuts seems to be miniscule compared to the insanity that is a book fan. The Sparkle War between Team Jacob and Team Edward, which took the lives of a massive amount of pre-teen girls (and a few awkward grown men), started long before the likes of Patterson and Lautner took form. That battle started back in the books.
